Bikeway Update
Pali Tunnel.
(Lighting
Update.) A big Mahalo goes to Herman Goldman from Electrical Solutions Corp, and Freddie from
DOT. After vandals destroyed the solar lighting system for the tunnel
bike lane last February, Herman has spent many days getting this feature
up and running again. Unfortunately, a lot of the original equipment is
now obsolete and the system had to be designed from scratch. While there
are still some issues to be resolved (2 of the 20 floodlights still
don't work, and the flashers light up instead of flashing), this system can
definitely working again. The more we use
it, the more used to it cars will become.
Honolulu Century Ride (September 26th). Walter
Enemoto is still keen to get an idea of support for this great event
on Oahu, and the event date has now been set. The course goes from Kapiolani
Park , heading east through Hawaii Kai, Waimanalo, Kailua, Kaneohe,
and up to past Chinaman's Hat and on along the windward side, and then
back to Kapiolani Park. The course has 25,50,75, and 100 mile distances.
It also has had anywhere from 2000-3000 riders in the past!! He thinks
it would be a neat experience us Maui guys to show up and join the
fun.
MTB Trail Update
Kahakapao trail Work (Sunday, July 18th, 8.30am). Thanks go out to the 13 who helped out with trail day #3 on the 20th June. We made great progress cutting in the bottom gully crossing. If you would
like to help out on the next trail building
day, you will definitely make an impact.
Tools to be provided by Na Ala Hele (Pruning saws, Brush axes and Machetes).
Our next work day is Sunday July 18th, meeting across from St. Joseph's
church at 8:30 A.M.
Bicycle Fundraising Update
Kings Trail Update. Although we ended up getting
all the volunteers we needed to provide support to this event, given the
last minute nature, the funding pool as smaller as the local canoe clubs
added more people as well. Regardless, we still raised $1,000 for the alliance.
Walter is looking into some time clock systems to be used in future events,
and Tom Armstrong is looking into some trail building tools to be used in
future trail building sessions! Thanks to all of those who helped out.
Ride For Rob Update. Graced with a perfect
day, over 40 people turned up at Keokea to help out cover Rob Andersons medical
costs. As usual Donnie Arnoult put on a great spread after woods --
the linen table cloths were a nice touch! Thanks also to Donnie's girlfriend
Michelle who ensured that all were well feed.
Kathy & Larry Somerton Update. A regular
participant in Maui's Annual Bike Club events, Kathy & Larry recently
completed a 1000 mile fundraising event. Dubbed the "VanToCino", they just finished
their 1,013 mile ride from Vancouver, BC to Mendocino, all riders intact
and over $100,000 raised for cancer research.
Definitely a fine effort.

for Skyline Trail. (DNLR Public Advisory Meeting June
16th, 2pm.) There has been some articles in the local papers
discussing the possibilities of commercial MTB descending down the Skyline
Trail. This topic is on the agenda for the next DNLR meeting and the
public will have an opportunity to voice their opinion. The meeting will
held at the Kahului Forestry Baseyard at 2 pm & Public testimonial
will be at 3pm.
Kings Trail Triathlon Update (Sunday
June 13) . Wanted to send a quick word of thanks to all of
those who came out and volunteered at this event last Sunday. Having volunteers
on the course who were cyclists ensured that athletes on the cycle
leg faced few problems, and enhanced the quality experience gained
by all who participated in this race. Congratulations also goes out
to all who competed in this event & for the organizers who once again
staged a world class event.
Ride for Rob Benefit (Sunday
June 27 - 7am )
. Donnie Arnoult asked if I could put out the word
for a benefit ride he is putting together for Rob Anderson. Rob
fell on his bike in Mid April and broke his Tibia. He has undergone
surgery and is now recovering. He had no insurance and could use our
help to pay some of his medical expenses. So Donnie will be putting on a ride June 27 in Keokea
to help raise some money for Rob. The ride is
called "Ride for Rob Benefit."
The ride
will start in Keokea near the park and go to the 25 mile marker past
Ulupalakua ranch and turn around. Then the ride will head back to Keokea
park for the finish. We will serve a Pancake breakfast afterwards,
and we'll have a few items for a silent actuation. The start time will be 7:00 am.
The route is roughly 38 miles. For more information
please contact Donnie at .
Ka Lima's Cycle to the Sun event (Sunday, August 29th). Mandatory

half a dozen mountain bike riders climbing above the 8000' gate, heading

Kings Trail Triathlon (Sunday, June 13 3004). Thanks to go out to the 21 people
who have volunteered for this event so far. Tom Armstrong has a complete
crew for the bike transition area. Frank still needs more people to help
out on the Bike Course. We need another 6 people .
Having volunteers who are cyclists will ensure
that athletes on the bike leg receive "intelligent" directions and assistance.
Choosing to help in this event will
do many things.
1. Help a local event that aids the Leukemia Foundation
of America
2. Make a "free" donation to the Maui Bicycle Alliance.
For every 10 volunteers we provide, the alliance receives $500 -- assuming
the event makes $$
3. Receive a free lunch & T-shirt
4. Give back to the Sport you all enjoy

Kings Trail Triathlon (Sunday, June
13 3004). This event
is now sold out. They expect to have almost 430 participating athletes, and the Alliance has been asked by
Maui Multi Sports to help out on the
bike section.
So once again, if you would like to give back
to your sport, and support an event which has helps both Maui & the Leukemia foundation,
now is you chance.
We have been
asked to provide volunteers for support out on the bike course, and in the
transition area.
This year,
support in the transition area has been broken into 3 time slots.
Slot
1. Saturday afternoon (June 12). Looking for volunteers to help set up the
transition area.
Slot 2. Sunday Morning (June 13). Here we will need volunteers from 7am till
lunch time, and you will be assisting athletes coming into & out of
the transition area.
Slot 3. Sunday Afternoon (June 13). >From after lunch till all is put
away.
These new time
slots will allow those of you who stated last year, "they would like
to volunteer with the event but couldn't because they were competing",
a chance to help out in either of these 2 afternoon stages.

Jim Stewart Ride Update. Frank from Sth Maui Bicycles asked if I could get this out,
after last weeks ride.
"Thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors
etc. for their help, congrats to all the riders that showed and completed
the course, the weather was better than it looked and some fairly fast times
were turned in Allister Knox did a 2:43 the fastest female was Marsha Sarver
with a 3:29 ( although there were rumors of a
women finishing ahead of Marsha but I wasn’t aware of it) it pays to check
in when you finish, Scott Campbell did the 50k in 1:39 with Maryann Loach
in 1:53 a special mention to Billy Conner who did the 100k on a one speed
beach cruiser in 5:41! Lots of T-shirts left over we would love to give to
paid registered riders that couldn’t make it, first come first served at
South Maui Bicycles while they last. Thanks Frank"

Event Updates
For
those interested in participating in this new MTB trail area, Trail Day
2 is being held next Sunday (23rd May). We are still in a preliminary
stage of the new trail area, and attendee's can have a direct input in the plan
for this new area.
The first trail day was
held last month, in conjunction with Torrie & Mark from DNLR (Na Ala Hele Trails) and Joey Klein from IMBA. The small group
who were present, leant first hand trail building skills, including how to
use a clinometer, which was a tool used in measuring terrain slopes. Volunteers
walked from the start and helped create an alternative route
for the first gulch crossing.
The aim for stage
2, is to mark (with tags) more of the trail, ensuring that we stick to the
contours. Up to 10 people can fit in DNLR Expedition, however a second
vehicle can be provided if numbers are known in advance.

Jim Stewart Metric Century Ride (Sunday, 18th
April 04). Frank from South Maui
Bicycles asked me to get the word out that the Jim Stewart Metric Century
ride has been subjected to a slight course change. The route has been changed
"due to road conditions" and as such you should plan for a west end out and
back.
Another thing is that Frank
still needs help with aid stations if we can get
a call out. Have them call Frank to volunteer to help.

Race starts in Paia. All registrations will be online, no registrations

Honolulu Century Ride. Walter Enemoto is still
keen to get an idea of support for this great event on Oahu. The ride takes place Sunday, Labor Day Weekend. The course
goes from Kapiolani Park , heading east through Hawaii Kai, Waimanalo, Kailua,

then back to Kapiolani Park. The course has 25,50,75, and 100 mile distances.

MTB Trail Updates
Kahakapao trail Discussion. For those who could attend (about 50 in total), Joey Klein
from IMBA put on an amazing power point presentation last week. It was great
to see that other areas throughout the world have been able to overcome "obstacles"
in order to create some fantastic new mountain biking areas. Thanks must
go out to the Helen from National Park, and Taurie from DNLR for organizing
(and sponsoring) Joey's Trip. Note that this new trail is one currently
the only new MTB trail in the state & as such we are a case study for
the rest of the islands. Taurie has been working on our new trail for many
years now & needs all of the ongoing support we can give
her.
Taurie also gave us the latest
on the Kahakapao trail status. Gulch crossing locations at the top &
bottom of the area have been finalized, and they are currently flagging the
new trail. Actual trail building can not begin until a new access road has
been cut, but once this has been completed, we will be calling for
volunteer crews to commence construction, in conjunction with Na Hele. On
a side note, if you know of any one who has commercial chainsaw experience,
Taurie is on the lookout for volunteers.

Aloha Maui Bicycle Alliance Supporters!
Quick update on things

Pali Tunnel
Lighting System
No good news regarding
the theft of the solar panels and charge control equipment from the Pali
Tunnel Lighting System. Lt George Kornoski from MPD forwarded the following
police report numbers should anyone have any information that they could
pass on. Please keep your ear and eyes open should you hear of
any leads, please pass them on to MPD.
Paia Mini-Bypass
Meeting.
The County of Maui
Public Works and Environmental Management is holding an informational meeting
on the proposed Paia Mini Bypass this Wednesday, the 17th (St.
Patrick's Day) at the Paia Community Center at 7:00pm. This meeting is meant
to give information only regarding the Paia Mini Bypass. Any comments regarding
this project that are submitted would be addressed in the Environmental Assessment.
We need to make sure that Phase 4 of the North Shore Greenway is not going
to be adversely affected by the widening of Hana Highway in the vicinity
of Baldwin Beach Park to Paia Bay. Anyone interested
in showing up at this meeting to help make sure we don’t get squeezed off
the greenway area would be greatly appreciated.
Honolulu
Century Ride
On my last trip to
Oahu, I was able to meet with the Executive Director of the Hawaii Bicycling
League to catch up on bike stuff. They are currently working with Outrigger
Hotels and JAL Airlines (major ride sponsor) to put on the next Honolulu
Century Ride. We spoke of the possibility of having Maui riders come over
for the event and they were very enthusiastic.
The ride takes place
Sunday, Labor Day Weekend. The course goes from Kapiolani Park , heading
east through Hawaii Kai, Waimanalo, Kailua, Kaneohe, and up to past Chainman's

SO......if you think
you might be interested, e-mail me back at so I can get a list
going. No commitments at this stage, just need to get a head count to see
what we can work out with HBL and Outrigger. Also, Outrigger is the only
hotel that allows bikes in the rooms at a number of their hotels. HBL members
also get 50% Hawaiian Air shipping on their bikes too. The best part is that
none of us have to help out so we can ride!!!! Would be neat if by then
we can get a Maui Bicycle Alliance Jersey done too!! Anyway, let me know
if you wanna go and we’ll coordinate via e-mail.
Thanks again and

Paia Mini - Community Bypass Meeting (Mar 17th,
yes this Wednesday)
****************
Aloha Maui Bicycle Alliance Supporters!
Quick update on things
going on from our illustrious acting President,
Walter Enomoto....
Hat and on along the windward side, and then back to Kapiolani Park. The
course has 25,50,75, and 100 mile distances. It also has had anywhere from
2000-3000 riders in the past!! What a neat
experience it would be for us Maui guys to show up and join the fun.
Thanks again and
Keep Spinning......Aloha
Walter Enomoto
